Stainless Steel Kitchenware & Cutlery from India for US Importers
US importers, retailers, Amazon and DTC brands, and foodservice distributors source stainless steel kitchenware, tableware, drinkware and flatware from India. India offers SS 304 and 18/0 ranges, PVD finishes and private-label packaging.
US rules for these goods changed several times in 2026. This page summarises the ones that affect landed cost and compliance, with the date each was checked and a link to the official source.

Who we work with in the USA
Retail ranges usually need UPC barcodes, retail-ready boxes and drop-tested e-commerce packs. Foodservice programmes buy open stock by the dozen and value pattern continuity. Many foodservice buyers ask for NSF/ANSI 51 certified food-equipment materials as a purchasing requirement; it is a voluntary standard, not a federal law.

Import rules to check for USA
| Rule | What it means | Status | Official source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Section 301 duty on goods from India | 10% on top of the normal HTS rate, in effect since 12:01 a.m. ET, 24 July 2026. Goods covered by Section 232 are generally outside its scope. | Checked | federalregister.gov |
| IEEPA tariffs struck down | The Supreme Court ruled on 20 Feb 2026 (Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump) that IEEPA does not authorise tariffs, so the earlier reciprocal tariffs no longer apply. | Checked | congress.gov |
| Section 232 steel and derivative articles | Since 6 Apr 2026, Section 232 duties on listed steel and derivative articles apply to the full customs value, at rates set by annex (10% to 50%). Articles with less than 15% metal by weight may be excluded. Household steel articles (7323) and cutlery lines (8211, 8215) appear on the derivative lists, so many steel kitchen products pay Section 232 instead of the Section 301 duty. Confirm your HTS code's Chapter 99 heading with your broker. | Checked | content.govdelivery.com |
| De minimis suspended | The $800 duty-free exemption is suspended for all countries and all transport modes, so low-value e-commerce parcels need a formal or informal entry. | Checked | cbp.gov |
| Origin marking for knives, forks and vacuum flasks | Knives, forks, steels, cleavers, vacuum containers and similar articles must be marked with their country of origin by die-stamping, cast-in-mould lettering, etching, engraving or metal plates. | Checked | ecfr.gov |
| Children's products | Children's tableware and cutlery need third-party testing (including lead limits) and a Children's Product Certificate. Certificate data must be eFiled in ACE from 8 July 2026. | Checked | cpsc.gov |
| Food-contact safety (FDA) | FDA regulates food-contact substances; some materials (prior-sanctioned or GRAS) need no notification, and manufacturers and importers remain responsible for safety. FDA does not issue grade-by-grade approvals for stainless steel, so keep evidence for grade, coatings, handle materials and gaskets. | Checked | fda.gov |
| California Proposition 65 | Products sold in California may need a warning if they contain listed chemicals, for example lead in brass parts or some coatings. | Checked | oehha.ca.gov |
| Importer Security Filing | Ocean shipments need an ISF (10+2) filed at least 24 hours before lading at the foreign port. | Checked | cbp.gov |

Materials, food contact and testing
- Grade claims
- "18/10" and "18/8" on US packaging should match the mill certificate and test evidence. Avoid "surgical steel" or "food grade" claims you cannot document.
- Testing
- There is no single federal migration test for stainless steel, so buyers typically specify grade verification and coating or handle tests, plus CPSC lead tests for children's items.
- Packaging
- UPC barcodes, Prop 65 labelling where applicable, origin marking on the product and the retail box, and Amazon-ready packs where needed.
Private label, QC and shipment planning
Plan sampling and testing before booking the container. Ocean transit from Nhava Sheva (JNPT) or Mundra to US East or West Coast ports usually adds several weeks, so confirm transit times with your forwarder. Final inspection should happen before the balance payment.

USA buyer questions
What US duty applies to stainless steel kitchenware from India in 2026?
The normal HTS rate plus either a Section 232 duty (for steel and derivative articles on the lists, charged on full value since 6 Apr 2026, which covers many household steel and cutlery lines) or the 10% Section 301 duty for other goods. Check your HTS code with your customs broker (checked 26 Oct 2026).
Do stainless steel knives from India need special marking?
Yes. US rules require knives to be marked with their country of origin by die-stamping, etching, engraving or a similar permanent method (19 CFR 134.43). Forks and vacuum flasks have the same rule.
Does FDA approve stainless steel cutlery?
FDA does not issue product approvals for stainless steel cutlery. The importer must make sure food-contact materials are safe, so we keep grade evidence and coating and handle documentation for your file.
Do kids' steel plates or cutlery need testing?
Yes. Children's products need third-party testing at a CPSC-accepted lab and a Children's Product Certificate, eFiled in ACE from 8 July 2026.
Can I ship small e-commerce orders duty-free?
No. The $800 de minimis exemption is suspended for all countries.
